Broadway Members Honored at AIDS Gala
AIDS Ministries/AIDS Assist celebrated twenty-five years of service to the HIV community in the South Bend-Elkhart area at a Gala on Oct. 23. At that event, ten individuals were recognized for their service. Three of those recognized are dear to the Broadway community and are shown above at a "Mystery at the Morris" fundraiser held some years ago. From left are Vicky Kaser, Rev. Linda Van Horn and Conrad Damian.
Vicki was one of the earliest clients of AIDS Ministries. When she learned that Broadway is a Covenant to Care congregation, she joined and soon became one of our most active members, serving on a meal team, leading the choir and becoming our lay leader. She spoke in many churches on behalf of those infected with HIV at a time when most were too afraid to even admit to being infected. She volunteered many hours of time with AIDS Ministries including sitting by many bedsides comforting the ill. She herself succumbed to complications from AIDS in 2003.
Linda became active in the Broadway congregation after moving to South Bend. She also volunteered much of her time at AIDS Ministries/AIDS Assist and was the secretary of the Board of Directors. As well as working with those who needed AIDS assistance, she spent hours researching information needed to improve the organization. She moved to New Jersey in 2008 to be with her family.
Conrad was asked to lead the development of AIDS Ministries in 1988 as a ministry of the former North Indiana Conference UMC. He served as chairman of the board for the first 18 years and continues to volunteer time to the organization.
Broadway has supported AIDS Ministries over its twenty-five year history. Eight members attended the gala dinner to celebrate the organization and our three honored members.
